Half measures : The journey of a costume in Paris

La demi-mesure - parcours d'un costume à Paris

Why couldn’t you treat yourself to this model seen in store that you like so much? Are you worried that this linen suit with this pretty Italian cut will look bad on you? That this shirt with this English collar thickens your neck? Or that the jacket of this Chanel suit doesn’t mark your waist enough?

This is why there is a half-measure : a designer model from a large house is transformed into a piece made just for you, to your measurements.

COSTUME AND HALF MEASURES: THE PRINCIPLE

Even in large-scale workshops , we make half-measures.

There is not a master tailor who does not offer his own models to personalize.

The principle: the patterns are the same for everyone, since the model is reproducible. We make adjustments after taking measurements and offer customization at different levels.

It may be that we only offer you to personalize the fabric and the buttons, or you may be asked to go much further and review the finishes, the style of sewing, lining, shoulders or wrists for example.

CAN YOU FIND HALF-MEASURE CLOTHING IN THE 7TH ARRONDISSEMENT OF PARIS?

4 km² of sartorial elegance and cultural heritage, which allow the 7th arrondissement of Paris to compete with the 8th or 16th.

No need to walk long to discover the boutiques and tailor-made workshops. From the wedding suit to the alteration of pants according to the rules of the art, the service will necessarily be meticulous in the shops and houses of this district of Paris.

THE SELECTION OF FABRICS FOR YOUR HALF-MEASURE SUIT

If this is a central point for you, then you should look towards large-scale workshops which offer a very wide choice of fabrics, directly in store.

If you opt for ready-to-wear type manufacturing, with a range of pre-selected fabrics, however, check the interfacing.

Will your suit be semi-canvassed or fully canvassed? These are significant criteria of quality, durability and comfort. Depending on this, the fabric will perform better when you are moving.

What is valid for the man is also valid for Madame , whether for her complete suit or her jacket, as for the making of a coat.

CONSULTATION AND APPOINTMENTS FOR MAKING A HALF-MEASURE SUIT

The time saving compared to large measurements is obvious: the pattern is ready, all that remains is to finally adjust it to your measurements. However, the thorny choices of personalization persist.

THE FIRST CONSULTATION: CHOICE OF MODEL AND FABRIC

What may take three or four hours in a large measure can be reduced to one or two hours in a half measure. In Paris, make an appointment with your boutique or the house that will guide you.

The tailor will suggest a model that suits your body type : rather traditional fit, rather double-breasted jacket…

The options will be those he sells, no more, no less.

In this case, the advice and the range will be up to the value for money.

You’re the boss as they say among tailors.

Likewise, you won’t find Loro Piana everywhere. You may not even have a choice of fabric.

Some workshops, to reduce the manufacturing time , subcontract the assembly of the costume abroad and each adaptation is an additional cost, or is sometimes even impossible.

A quick tour of the house’s website will tell you about the complete manufacturing process of the model.

THE SECOND MEETING: TAKING MEASUREMENTS AND CHOOSING ACCESSORIES AND FINISHES

This is a step that could very well be included during the first consultation. It all depends on whether your tailor is available and if he prefers to give you time to think.
In Paris, particularly on the left bank , it is likely that taking measurements will lead to a new meeting.

The measurement is done in the traditional way. The key points are:

  • The size
  • Chest
  • The bust
  • Hips
  • Arms
  • The wrists
  • Legs

Then the tailor will assemble the patterns closest to the customer’s natural size and adjust them.

This will allow him to create a first prototype which will have to be tested.

If, however, the measurements are precise and they are carried out by scanner for example, it is possible that the costume goes directly into production.

This step, depending on the method used (technology or entirely by hand), can take between thirty minutes and an hour, depending on the number of measurements taken.

The more there are, the closer we get to very high quality standards.

Finally, you will choose the type of sewing (if it is offered), the style of your buttons and your buttonholes.

THE THIRD MEETING: COSTUME FITTING

Or the prototype. You understand that the number of steps increases depending on the level of tailoring (this is also a signal to know who you are dealing with). And it’s true that we find absolutely all levels of offer in half measures. The work is not the same if you are asked to choose a shape of pocket or jacket closure.

This step may be the last if you choose same day delivery. Which means that the edits will be minimalist. In which case, you will have to allow an hour and a half.

If this is the step before touch-ups, thirty minutes is enough.

The final step: delivery of your costume

Since it is not handmade, the production will be automated. Generally, your garment is made abroad (in Portugal in particular). Your dedicated team does not control the entire production chain. This is why it generally takes a minimum of four weeks to finally put on the costume of your favorite stylist.

HALF MEASURES: BRAND STYLE MARRIES MEN AND WOMEN

Reinterpret a collection thanks to personalized details , add your own unique touch to make a difference and escape the ready-to-wear style. For your wedding or your city outfits and whatever your style, half-measures opens the doors to haute couture in Paris, and tailors with a strong reputation in the 7th arrondissement .
